He is married to the textile artist and translator Lucinda Mayo. Dr. Hogan is well-known for his many best-selling books on Mexican history, including the “Irish Soldiers of Mexico” which was the basis for an MGM movie, and for his popular classes at the American School Foundation where he is Emeritus Chair of Humanities. Two of his more recent works are highly praised. “Mexicans and Mexican Americans,” which was reviewed in both Latina Magazine and the Smithsonian, and “Guns Grit and Glory, How the US and Mexico Came Together to defeat the last Empire in the Americas,” which was selected as the book of the year on US-Mexico relations by Washington University. Today he will be sharing anecdotes from both books which will be for sale after his talk. Perspective on life even helps define those possibilities that can arise from our experiences! While our intent helps define the probabilities associated with those experiences! Does this help explain why elements of the same experience affect people so differently? If future success relies on development of a bigger picture, how do we take a new outlook that includes the bigger picture? Learn the practical importance of a bigger picture for you! Learn to see perspectives and consider sources. Our perspective can be referenced to a single issue (smallest picture) or to the creation as a whole (biggest picture) or somewhere in between. Our choice makes the difference. Meditation has made it very clear to me that the bigger picture plays a more influential role than the local picture. New love for planetary transformation, all possibilities. Where do we find all the possibilities? The bigger picture, the whole enchilada. What if don’t want or value some possibilities? We are told that a viewpoint that is open to all possibilities makes healing more unrestricted and thus more appropriate to the petitioner’s evolutionary state. To experience all possibilities, we are told that it pays big dividends to expand our heart to include the bigger picture, to the broadest view, even as large as the creation. We are told that the bigger picture contains more truth, more possibilities, all of life’s elements. By relying on the energy of the bigger picture, but what is the bigger picture that makes such a difference? Examples of wholeness are the inclusiveness of love and the unity of life! In fact, a caring viewpoint can open us enough to include all kinds of possibilities! Just notice what happens when you care. Your heart expands to include more possibilities related to your intent. The Gay Games are considered to be the most important sports and cultural competition of diversity. Like the Olympic Games, it is held every four years with 10,000 participants. The Gay Games, in addition to integrating sports disciplines, also integrates a cultural and conference agenda. Metropolitan Guadalajara is proud to host The Gay Games. It´s not necessary to belong to the LGBTTIQ+ community to participate, it´s required to be over 18 years of age. The competitions are open to varied abilities. Come learn why Guadalajara was chosen as a host and how you might support this effort as a volunteer, a participant, a spectator or to sponsor a local participant. The Gay Games in Guadalajara will be held from November 3- 11. There are 22 sports that make up the competition. They only work on programs operating Windows 7 or before. That’s old! Our software programs are very outdated and largely not supported. Parts are not to be found and systems are very slow. We must switch to a new user-friendly computer system, we want all of our constituents to experience the benefit to you with this new system. If you have ever bought anything online, you will probably find this program easy for you. This system will improve customer service, make your experiences with LCS easier and quicker. Of course we will still have full service available to you in our office if computers are not your thing, or you just want the face-to-face experience. You will be able to register for classes and buy tickets from almost any device - your tablet, your computer, your smart phone - whatever you are most comfortable with. For those who wish, and are comfortable with the program, you won't have to wait in line or come to the office during certain office hours. You will be able to do a lot of the things once requiring an office visit from anywhere, at any time. This system will easily allow you to register for classes, or trips and make it much easier to buy tickets to Concerts and special events at LCS. Most people say that is old age. But it should not be like that. Just a little bit of effort and knowledge and our ripe years will be a blessing and not a cause of suffering. In this presentation we shall talk about the three essential parts which we should work on to keep the mind sharp: 1. The BODY as the base for the mind should be kept flexible and strong. 2. BREATH — over the years the breath becomes shorter and irregular. This affects the general health, the emotions, and the mental activity. So, we should practice long, calm and regular breathing. Otherwise, we are quickly out of breath when we walk up the stairs. 3. The MIND — the main cause for a weak mind and bad memory is the constant distraction of the mind. With concentration on what we are doing at this very moment, we keep the mind sharp and in the present moment. Dr. Franklin will address the events growing out of the British aggression against the Patriots who continue to fight and die in the cause of Liberty. Since he made his last address at Open Circle, Dr. Franklin has recovered from an ill-fated diplomatic trip to Canada which nearly cost him his life. Upon his return to Philadelphia, he co-authored the Declaration of Independence and helped shepherd it through Congress. On September 11th, he met with the British commander in a last ditch effort to find a peaceful end to the war. That effort failed and the United States is now faced with a prolonged war. The setting for Dr. Franklin's latest Open Circle talk is dockside in Philadelphia. It is October 28, 1776 and the 70 year-old Franklin is about to depart on the most important mission of his career. The future of the United States hangs in the balance. Please come to wish Dr. Franklin success on his critical endeavor. It’s important to note that social attitudes and acceptance towards LGBTTTQ+ individuals can vary within a society, including within different regions of Mexico. While legal protections exist, there may still be ongoing challenges related to societal acceptance and discrimination in various contexts. So it’s good to know our heart is like a second brain. It does far more than pump blood to keep our bodies alive. According to scientific research by the HeartMath Institute, the heart sends many more messages to the brain than the brain sends to the heart. Human hearts are receivers of energies from the earth’s magnetic energy fields. They are also receivers and transmitters of energies created by human emotions, both positive and negative. Positive energies created by love, appreciation and compassion make us happier, more peaceful and healthier. They also have positive effects on other people and on our brains’ cognition. Negative emotions such as fear and anxiety create depleting energies that can have negative effects on cells in our bodies. And they can inhibit our abilities to relate well to other people. What especially was revealed on this journey was the legacy these people left for today’s individual and society evolution, which I will explore in this presentation. The old towns built by the Spanish conquistadors with the overwhelming stamp of their churches and European heritage permeates the contemporary world of Mexico. Yet where these two cultures meet one finds a unique space wherein lies vibrant aspects of the indigenous ancient cultures and customs. The meeting of opposites has wrought richness, diversity and inclusion, which offers unforgettable impressions: wonderful mix of art, music and culture that truly inspires the soul. Noris Binet is from the Dominican Republic, has resided in Ajijic for five years, and previously lived in Mexico from 1976 to 1989. As Dave continued his learning (the best way to learn it is to teach!), he discovered more and more fascinating and incredibly inspiring women who'd never made the textbooks. (Duh! The books had been written by men! Dave felt cheated, and vowed not to similarly let his students down.) In 1929, Paramhansa Yogananda came to Mexico. He met with then president Emilio Portes Gil and visited Lake Chapala. While in Chapala, Yogananda wrote a poem dedicated to the lake. During this time an iconic photo of him aboard a sailboat was taken. This photo has circulated across the world and is internationally known and loved. Many expats here in Lake Chapala and local Mexican residents are aware of Yogananda's visit to Lake Chapala and there is a natural curiosity as to why he came here. Yogananda's time spent in Lake Chapala happened during a critical turning point in his life. Nayaswami Premdas, our guest speaker from Ananda Village in Northern California, will share his insights and reflections as to who Yogananda was, and why his presence in the West is so important. This conversation will deal with some of the results of the “Comparative Study of the International Communities in the areas of Ajijic and Puerto Vallarta” carried out by professors of the University of Guadalajara. Particularly the data obtained from the Survey applied to expats in these areas, during the years 2020 to 2021. Among the main findings is the verification that expats do not form an aggregate group because they share or keep a certain similarity in their sociodemographic features. We consider the existence of structural differences, which are reflected, for example, in their party and ideological preferences, among others. We also consider the time period in which they have immigrated and the places where they reside, issues that have already been studied. This also implies diverse patterns of behavior, in their form and scope of inclusion in the local communities and could become prototypes. It´s not necessary to belong to the LGBTTIQ+ community to participate, it´s required to be over 18 years of age. The competitions are open to varied abilities. If you have ever bought anything online, you will probably find this program easy for you. This system will improve customer service, make your experiences with LCS easier and quicker. Of course we will still have full service available to you in our office if computers are not your thing, or you just want the face-to-face experience. You will be able to register for classes and buy tickets from almost any device - your tablet, your computer, your smart phone - whatever you are most comfortable with. For those who wish, and are comfortable with the program, you won't have to wait in line or come to the office during certain office hours. You will be able to do a lot of the things once requiring an office visit from anywhere, at any time. Upon his return to Philadelphia, he co-authored the Declaration of Independence and helped shepherd it through Congress. On September 11th, he met with the British commander in a last ditch effort to find a peaceful end to the war. That effort failed and the United States is now faced with a prolonged war. The setting for Dr. Franklin's latest Open Circle talk is dockside in Philadelphia. It is October 28, 1776 and the 70 year-old Franklin is about to depart on the most important mission of his career. So it’s good to know our heart is like a second brain. It does far more than pump blood to keep our bodies alive. According to scientific research by the HeartMath Institute, the heart sends many more messages to the brain than the brain sends to the heart. Human hearts are receivers of energies from the earth’s magnetic energy fields. They are also receivers and transmitters of energies created by human emotions, both positive and negative. Positive energies created by love, appreciation and compassion make us happier, more peaceful and healthier. They also have positive effects on other people and on our brains’ cognition. Negative emotions such as fear and anxiety create depleting energies that can have negative effects on cells in our bodies. And they can inhibit our abilities to relate well to other people. Barbara Hildt, a Lakeside resident since 2009, has been an art teacher, a Peace Corps volunteer, a community organizer, a state legislator and a trainer of youth and adults in peacemaking skills. For spiritual guidance and peace, she has made meditation a staple of her life. With help from the HeartMath Institute, Barbara has learned to use heart coherence to improve her mental, emotional, and physical health. Love energy she receives with an open heart benefits her relationships with others and allows her to connect to souls far away on earth, as well as with the souls of loved ones no longer living in physical bodies.

Ajijic has a long history of traditions and practices that predate the arrival of foreigners – including the Spanish, centuries ago. Many of these are quietly maintained and cherished by the local villagers. Have you seen them? Maybe. Those rockets? Well, you certainly heard them. But what exactly is happening? Come and enjoy learning about some of the lesser-known traditions of Ajijic. Phil Rylett arrived in Mexico 10 years ago and was lucky enough to be the neighbor of the Cronista of Ajijic, Eduardo Ramos Cordero, affectionately known in the village as Lalo. The village cronista is a recognized title in Mexico and is given to community leaders who have taken it upon themselves to preserve and revive village customs and traditions. Lalo is the organizer of Pasión de Cristo, Verbena Jamaica del Pasado, Batalla de las Flores, and many other activities in Ajijic. This will be a unique opportunity to hear about the actual need of local charities who are engaged in the work of performing human services around Lake Chapala. A number of charities will be present and will briefly speak to their need for committed and talented volunteers. Following these presentations, there will be a chance to speak directly to represented charities and to be enrolled in the life saving work and human services provided by these different groups. The satisfaction that this type of work confers will not only transform the community - it will also transform the giver. We invite you to this very different Open Circle. This was my husband’s first taste of the 11 Mexican states we traversed which I travelled through 40 years ago. My purpose was to reconnect with the energy left behind in the ancient cultures, temple sites and multiplicity of archeological artifacts, all of which demonstrated the sophistication of these cultures and the profound interconnection that they have with nature and the world of the spirit. What especially was revealed on this journey was the legacy these people left for today’s individual and society evolution, which I will explore in this presentation. The old towns built by the Spanish conquistadors with the overwhelming stamp of their churches and European heritage permeates the contemporary world of Mexico. Yet where these two cultures meet one finds a unique space wherein lies vibrant aspects of the indigenous ancient cultures and customs. The meeting of opposites has wrought richness, diversity and inclusion, which offers unforgettable impressions: wonderful mix of art, music and culture that truly inspires the soul. Noris Binet is from the Dominican Republic, has resided in Ajijic for five years, and previously lived in Mexico from 1976 to 1989. She is a visual artist, poet, author, spiritual teacher, and sociologist completing her studies at the University of Guadalajara. She has studied with several indigenous communities including the Tarasco, Mayas, and Huichols Indians. She has spent decades working with individuals and diverse communities to build bridges and to promote the reclamation in indigenous and immigrant communities of their own sacred roots in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other countries. Once he got out of their clutches, though, he learned that he actually loved it, and ended up teaching it for 36 years. He did not instruct the way they did. Rather than focus on a boring litany of names, battles, and dates, he explored enduring, compex human issues that all societies of any epoch must face; and equally complex but fascinating biographies of individuals who faced difficult moral choices in their quest to lead authentic lives and make a difference. As Dave continued his learning (the best way to learn it is to teach!), he discovered more and more fascinating and incredibly inspiring women who'd never made the textbooks. (Duh! The books had been written by men! Dave felt cheated, and vowed not to similarly let his students down.) In his engaging and memorable talk (He's a raconteur!), Dave will share his favorite women heroes. If you attend, they'll become yours, too. David Ellison is an Ohio native (but he escaped!), Dave was a San Francisco Bay Area educator (teacher, mentor teacher, administrator) and wrote an education column for the local newspaper. Living in a community of elder and aged individuals, like me, we are constantly faced with the conditions that normal aging creates for ourselves and all the friends we make in Lakeside. How do we prepare ourselves for the changes we can expect and those we can’t? Can we change our minds from fear and denial to acceptance, preparation, and even celebration? What are the skills we can master to adapt to the changes? How do we develop the capacity to be present for those we love as they experience aging and changing and dying before us? Loretta Downs is a gerontologist who has been working with aging and dying for over 35 years. She is an inspiring and uplifting speaker who is passionate about improving the end-of-life experience. She has published numerous articles, been quoted in articles and books, and interviewed for radio shows and podcasts. Loretta gives advance care planning workshops at LCS, speaks where invited, and offers her services as a death doula. This is her 11th Open Circle presentation. Dale Hoyt Palfrey unexpectedly found her calling as a bilingual journalist within a few years of putting down roots on Lake Chapala’s shores. In 1929, Paramhansa Yogananda came to Mexico. He met with then president Emilio Portes Gil and visited Lake Chapala. While in Chapala, Yogananda wrote a poem dedicated to the lake. During this time an iconic photo of him aboard a sailboat was taken. This photo has circulated across the world and is internationally known and loved. Many expats here in Lake Chapala and local Mexican residents are aware of Yogananda's visit to Lake Chapala and there is a natural curiosity as to why he came here. Yogananda's time spent in Lake Chapala happened during a critical turning point in his life. Nayaswami Premdas, our guest speaker from Ananda Village in Northern California, will share his insights and reflections as to who Yogananda was, and why his presence in the West is so important. This Open Circle presentation is the first in a series of events slated for “Yogananda Week in Ajijic,” March 5-10, 2023. Nayaswami Premdas serves in various roles with Ananda Sangha Worldwide, a successful intentional community of 55 years founded by Swami Kriyananda and dedicated to sharing the teachings of the Indian Yogi, Paramhansa Yogananda. This conversation will deal with some of the results of the “Comparative Study of the International Communities in the areas of Ajijic and Puerto Vallarta” carried out by professors of the University of Guadalajara. Particularly the data obtained from the Survey applied to expats in these areas, during the years 2020 to 2021. Among the main findings is the verification that expats do not form an aggregate group because they share or keep a certain similarity in their sociodemographic features. We consider the existence of structural differences, which are reflected, for example, in their party and ideological preferences, among others. We also consider the time period in which they have immigrated and the places where they reside, issues that have already been studied. This also implies diverse patterns of behavior, in their form and scope of inclusion in the local communities and could become prototypes. People may not be aware that over 1,000 people per week visit LCS, and there are approximately 100 activities that take place in and around LCS. Few could name them all. Steve is in his last year as President of the Board and this marks the 2 year anniversary since Luis started as the Executive Director. At last year’s AGM Steve charged the Board of Directors and Senior Management with 5 priority goals. We knew at the time this would be a two year plan as there was a lot of ground work to be done. As we strive to remain accessible, transparent, and accountable, we are providing this update regarding our vital work and accomplishments. In this presentation entitled "The Four Desires?", David Bryen will invite us to evaluate whether these motivators alone are sufficient to illuminate the yearning for fulfillment of our deepest human longings and lift the veil that shrouds our truest desires. David promises to provide no answers, but invites us to explore the hungry nature of the complex human soul, in the hope that this inquiry will encourage and equip us for dialogue with others and thereby heal rather than feed the divisions that increasingly separate us. In his published books, his poetry, his love for wood, David has long been a voice working to awaken the sensations of the soul. He retired to Ajijic from his psychotherapy practice in 2012. He's raced sailboats, built his own house, been a lifetime motorcyclist, motorcycle safety instructor, master wood craftsman, and for 5 years served as the coordinator of Open Circle. This will be his 11th presentation at Open Circle.
