Open Circle Ajijic February 11, 2024 Valaentine's Concert by Local Mariachi School YouTube link: Video Not Availble! Enjoy a performance by up-and-coming mariachi Lakeside musicians. The Escuela de Mariachi Pedro Rey (Pedro Rey Mariachi School) is teaching the mariachi style of music to a new generation of musicians. It's helping to preserve Mexican traditions by offering a musical study program focused on mariachi for children, youths, and adults. School director Dany Medeles, one of the key founders and driving forces behind this program along with dedicated music teachers, provides instruction and motivation to students. They ensure the correct execution of instruments such as guitar, violin, trumpet, vihuela (a five-string guitar-like instrument from 19th-century Mexico), guitarrón (a very large, deep-bodied Mexican six-string acoustic bass guitar), as well as a children´s choir. The musicians will play songs in the tradition of mariachi music, also called “son jaliscience” (Jalisco sound), native to Jalisco state and made famous in Guadalajara city. Donations collected during the presentation will go to support the school and its unique programs. Early-onset dementia is increasing in people under 65. By 2050, 153 million people are expected to be living with dementia worldwide, up from 57 million in 2019, largely due to an ageing population. There is no cure for dementia, but much can be done to support both people living with the illness and those who care for them. Loretta Downs is a gerontologist who has been working with aging and dying for over 35 years. She will describe some important realities of this destructive disease using research studies and personal experience. She will explore ways in which having dementia or caring for someone who is losing memory can transform a stressful burden to fertile ground for personal growth. Loretta is an inspiring and uplifting speaker who is passionate about improving the end-of-life experience. She has published numerous articles, been quoted in articles and books, and interviewed for radio shows and podcasts. Loretta gives advance care planning workshops at LCS, speaks where invited, and offers her services as a death doula.

Dr. Franklin (Steven Nousen) has just marked the 84th anniversary of his birth and knows he does not have long to live. He has been quite ill but insists upon gathering his closest friends into his Philadelphia home to reflect on his extraordinary life. He will also share some thoughts about recent events such as his role in drafting the Constitution of the United States and his views on the afterlife. In his previous appearances at Open Circle, Dr. Franklin has recounted his early years as a printer, his role as a diplomat to both the English and French governments, his role in drafting the Declaration of Independence, and his family relationships. Videos are available on the Open Circle website. As a member of the audience, you will be playing the role of citizens of Philadelphia on January 28th 1790. Steven Nousen has been performing as Ben Franklin for most of the 21stcentury in multiple venues including the Library of Congress and the National Geographic Society. It is important to individualize the reason for these signs and symptoms to generate a correct diagnosis, prognosis and treatment, Since all bodies are different and react to stimulations in a different way. I will share with you how Kinesiology can benefit your body with simple and useful strategies such as therapeutic exercise, muscle stretching, muscle activation and more. As our bodies mature, stretching can have a big impact on our lives. Eric Gonzalez is a local Kinesiologist, specialized in treating older adults and in this open circle he will share with you functional techniques that generate a positive change in our body and add to comfortable living. Meanwhile, he was a devout “American” as well, believing that the United States of America was God’s bastion of goodness and democracy on Earth; that everyone admired and envied the country–and him. But then (thank goodness!), he traveled abroad, immersing himself in a foreign culture and language; and he studied, finally questioning with an open/critical mind. The dogmas came tumbling down…leaving him bereft, disillusioned, bewildered, lost. He had no choice but to finally decide for himself what he would believe, who he would become. Dave will share his heartfelt philosophical and personal journey; which, in the end, is (or, at least, ought to be) everyone’s. Larry works to ensure compliance with UOCAVA (Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act). This is the crucial act that allows you and all other United States citizens living abroad to vote from outside the U.S. In fact, UOCAVA requires that all states plus D.C. and Puerto Rico and all the Territories allow U.S. citizens living or working abroad to vote by absentee ballot in elections. This legislation was signed by Ronald Reagan in 1986 and is administered by the Department of Defense.
