Consular Service Fees: The United States Consulate in Guadalajara has expanded efforts to make their monthly passport and notary services easier for lakeside residents. While they still do not accept personal checks or cash or credit cards at lakeside, a move has been made to ease the process of getting cashier checks. Peso denominated cashier checks, at the rate set monthly by the American Embassy in Mexico City, will now be accepted from multiple local banks, including Banamex, Bancomer, HSBC, Banorte, Santander and ScotiaBank. Peso cashier checks are made payable to “United States Disbursing Officer on behalf”. US dollar cashier checks based on the listed dollar fees can be purchased at Bancomer, Banamex, Santander, Intercam, Order Express, USPS, or any U.S. Bank within 90 days of presentation. The upside to all these new alternatives is that your Mexican local bank may charge a lower fee to prepare a check in either pesos or dollars than the single bank previously designated. US dollar cashier checks are made payable to “United States Consulate”. The fees for USCG services vary with the exchange rate for the Mexican Peso. Please note that the exchange rate is set by the Embassyand will not usually be the same rate that can be obtained at a bank or currency exchange facility. For current prices for passports and notarial services, send an e-mail to the USCG at acsgdl@state.gov or to Norm Pifer, Consulate Volunteer Representative at lakeside. Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Mexico enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at www.Travel.State.Gov. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Regularly monitor the State Department's website, where you can find current Travel Warnings (including the Travel Warning for Mexico), Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution. Read the Country Specific Information for Mexico. For additional information, refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad” on the State Department’s website. | Calendar of U.S Citizens Services Outreach Visits to Lakeside, 2021: Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the Consulate’s visits to Chapala have been cancelled until further notice.
